拉曼大学化学系介绍 - 英文版(Chemistry Course Year 1 Subjects (May intake)) 对化学系和化学工程系有混淆的同学可以看看!

In this post, I will briefly introduce the subject that I had attended in my year 1 trimesters.

Year 1 Trimester 1
1. Atomic Structure, Bonding and Periodicity
2. Computer Systems and Applications
3. Calculus and Algebra
4. General Physics
5. Sun Zi’s Art of War and Business Strategies
6. Emotional Intelligence at the Workplace
7 Chemistry Laboratory I

Subject 1 consists of three parts. Atomic Structure is more to the atom itself, go deeper to the subshell of element.(can you recall that the electron arrangement of Br is 2.8.18.7, this subject will explain why 18 will occur there.) . They start to explain the effect of light toward to atom as the foundation before proceed to spectroscopy. Periodicity explains on the ionization energy, affinity energy, radius of the atom/ion across the period and over a group. Bonding is something like polarity of the bonding, intermolecular forces and hybridization.
Besides, this subject also illustrates the molecular shape, bond angle. I just scanned through my lecturer note and give a brief summary on what I had learnt.

Subject 2 is about computer system, history, input(keyboard, mouse, data, binary system), operating system (program), output (monitor, printer, fax,), working principle of CD ROM, Harddisk, type of CD, internet.
Apart from those knowledge related to computer, we also come across on web page design. We learn to understand the HTML code, create table, embed video, music in web page, insert figure and adjust the size of the figure, design the background and blak blak blak. (Basically this help me a lot in designing my blog sicne those code helped me a lot.)

Subject 3, differentiation, integration in advanced. My friends who studied STPM felt familiar to this subject. So they have close syllabus I guess. But STPM cover more. We learn also vector, matrix, complex number, ordinary differential equation. This subject is really not my cup of tea. So I just briefly go through…. (nightmare keep on prompting out in my mind. Those who dislike A-math, be careful in this subject)

Subject 4, study on solid (type of bonding, attractive force involved in bonding, kinetic moment of atom), liquid (pressure, buoyancy, flow, viscosity, surface tension), gas (PV=nRT, Boyle, Charles), light, heat, interference.

Subject 5, introduce about Sunzi’s Art of War by translating them from Chinese to English and linked to business field by showing applications.

Subject 6, some kind of elective subject that let us understand what is emotion and how to control them to become a person with high emotional intelligence. We carried out activities in class, assignment to visit orphanage house and lecturer note is not that important since is a pass or failed subject.

Subject 7, is some lab work on the course that we studied. For example, we studied Atomic structure in this trimester, so we will carry out some experiment related to this subject and we need to write report on those experiments as well. This is just a beginning on the nightmare of report writing.

Year 1 Trimester 2
1. Organization and Human Resource
2. Introduction to Sociology
3. Pendidikan Moral
4 Introduction to Japanese Language

Subject 1 introduce about management, organization (structure, culture) and how human resource function in the organization (HR planning, Recruitment, Employee selection, training. motivation, power, team, communication, conflict, negotiation, employee relation)

Subject 2 is about sociology and their effect to the society in many terms. Sociolization, Social inequality, health, behaviours were the field that we discussion. This is an interesting subject that bring us along with brief idea on sociology, yet, is a tough subject for science student.

Subject 3….. pendidikan moral…. What is the learning outcome that I should share? No more nilai nilai murni and memorizing the definition of each nilai murni. (I believe those who get graduated from secondary school can memorize that nilai murni pertama: Kepercayaan kepada Tuhan: Keyakinan kewujudnya Tuhan and blak blak balk… all those this is not necessary again) I skip this subject. It’s just too bored until I don’t wish to recall a thing from it!

Subject 4, we learn about the pronunciation of Japanese word and simple term of Japanese word. We learn to speak Japanese in the certain situation like greeting, before eating and asking question. Just imagine that you are in kindergarten to learn your local language, is just the SAME!

Year 1 Trimester 3
1 Functional Biology
2 English for Science
3 Properties of Matter
4 Ancillary Statistics
5 Chemistry Laboratory II

Subject 1 talk about the fundamental elements, structures, and processes which enable organisms to live, reproduce, and adapt. (such as carbohydrate, protein, lipid, DNA, cell). In addition, this subject provided the ecological concepts included population dynamics, ecosystems, communities, environment cycles, biomass, evolution of organization. This subject provided some introduction to the subject of environment science and technology.

Subject 2 bring the idea on the reading skills, method to write letter and memo, apply APA style reference and citation, report writing, method to avoid plagiarism and graphical interpretation.. This study builds a foundation to write report which will be used during your thesis writing. Yeah, I totally regret that why I don’t really study hard in this subject because my writing skills is terrible. TERRIBLE!

Subject 3 consists of two parts that the first part explains the rate of reaction, factors that affect the rate of reaction and the order of reaction. The second part teach again the organics such as nomenclatures, alkenes, alkyl halides, alcohols, ether, amine, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, nitriles, epoxides and just similar to the syllabus in the secondary school and foundation but added with more details. This subject generally give fundamental knowledge for student to be ready with the coming subject, which is kinetics, mechanism and stereochemistry (Y3S1) and Properties of Organic Compounds (Y2S1).

Subject 4 is on the population, sample, standard deviation, variation, mean, medium for those grouped data and ungrouped data. We also learn on calculating probability, permutation, combination, binomial probability distribution, Poisson Probability Distribution, Normal distribution, population and sampling distribution, estimation (using t-distribution, confidential interval). It sound familiar with your mathematics class during your secondary school. In addition, we also learn on analysis of variance, (ANOVA), Regression and Correlation and Statistical quality control which are new for those SPM and Foundation student but I not not sure on those STPM student.
 *permutation  (remember 3! = 1x2x3=6? And also the formula of nPr = n!/ (n-r)!),
*combination (slightly similar to permutation but only the formula nCr = n!/ r!(n-r)!)

Subject 5 is the lab works and experiments that related to the chemistry subject and we need to write report. Nightmare coming soon for the following trimester because the chemistry related subject keeping increasing. For example if we have 3 subject in that trimester,  meaning that we need to write at least 2 report per week. If you can hold on this until Year 3, the nightmare will leave us. Less reports per week but we have our final year project which is another nightmare come ahead. So… enjoy the nightmare. :DD

  1. hey coursemate~~ :p
I just write down wat we had learn before and convenient for other who interested on chemistry instead of chemical engineering. coz i don have mood on writing other posts. XD
